It is an undeniable fact that obesity is a major issues in the United States. With more than one-third of adults being obese and a plethora of chronic health conditions that result such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease, our healthcare costs are rising (â€Å"Overweight†). As a result, we must analyze the situation and determine the source of the problem. Junk food and other snacks that provide little nutritional value are accepted as a major contributor to the problem, especially for children who may be exposed to advertisements for junk food on television and at school. The first step in conquering the obesity epidemic is not banning junk food outright in schools. Instead, we must focus on educating young children about making healthy†¦show more content†¦Metallo presents a convincing argument, as schools have many concerns just beyond school lunches and food sales. While health should be an important concern of schools, it is extremely difficult to enforce junk food circulation when there are many readily available sources of junk food outside of schools such as convenience stores. We should take personal responsibility for our health and wellbeing instead of relying on the government to make decisions for us. Responsibility for our own healthcare costs will incentivize us to make healthier decisions. Lack of responsibility is the root of the problem, as the reliance on healthcare and government programs as a crutch will merely exacerbate the issue. The government already plays a large part in our lives, but they should not be controlling everything we eat on a daily basis. It is not anyone elses responsibility if I make unhealthy decisions, and they should not be penalized if I neglect my health and well-being (Balko).
